So this week was brewing week for my Traditional Alcoholic Beverages class and my group got to make (start) our beer today! (below are the signs that our teacher put up)
We decided to start with a honey wheat ale and add some cinnamon spicing to it.
The first step is to weigh the grains and hops and then add water to the grains (mashing) and let the grains sit and soak for a while. Above, Yui is stirring the grains while water fills the container.
We then added our hops before boiling. They had all different types of hops and they all smelled so unique that we had a good time going through them. The picture shows the hops in the silver pouches before we added them in.
After it was done being boiled we used this funny looking thing to cool it back down quickly.
Next we put it into another container and added the yeast.
After the yeast was added it was ready for fermentation meaning we have to leave it for a few days now.
So far, the process has been tons of fun and really interesting! I can't wait to see how everyone's beers turn out and I have a feeling there will be quite a range after listening to what some people were planning on making.
That looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions about this course if you don't mind.
I'm going for a semester exchange next January and I'm thinking of taking this as an elective. I hear that there's quite a lot of science/chemistry involved, is that true? I'm really really terrible at science and I'm afraid that the science part might be too difficult. It would be really helpful if you could give me your opinion on the course. Thanks!
